Legalities and Requirements for Getting Married in Belize

Dreaming of saying “I do” against a backdrop of stunning Belizean landscapes? Planning a destination wedding in Belize is a romantic adventure, but before you exchange vows in paradise, it’s crucial to understand the legalities and requirements for getting married in this tropical haven.

Understanding the Legal Process in Belize

Getting married in Belize involves a straightforward process, but it’s essential to grasp the legalities. Both partners must be present in Belize for at least 72 hours before applying for a marriage license. The actual application process can vary, so it’s advisable to plan this well in advance to ensure everything runs smoothly on your special day.

Documentation Needed for a Destination Wedding in Belize:

  • Proof of Citizenship: Bring your passport as proof of citizenship.
  • Original Birth Certificate: You’ll need to present your original birth certificate.
  • Divorce Certificate or Death Certificate: If either partner has been previously married, provide the original divorce certificate or death certificate.

Before jetting off to Belize, ensure you have all the necessary documents in hand to avoid any last-minute hiccups. For more detailed information on the specific requirements and processes, you can refer to Belize Wedding Requirements, Marriage Licenses in Belize, and Belize Destination Wedding Tips & Legal Info.

How much does it cost to get married in Belize?

A Belize marriage license costs $100 per couple, plus a $5 administrative fee. It takes two days to obtain your license after applying. Two witnesses must be present at your ceremony. After the ceremony, you’ll need to register your marriage with the Belize Registry Department.

Some all-inclusive packages in Belize cost as low as $2,500-3000, which usually includes wedding coordinator, a private beach event, a bridal bouquet, a wedding cake, sparkling wine for the toast, and traditional Garifuna drummers. You would still have to cover travel, the wedding photographer of your choice (I volunteer as tribute, see my portfolio.), and off-site excursions.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Venue

When selecting the ideal venue for your Belize destination wedding, there are several important factors to keep in mind. Consider the following to ensure your choice aligns with your vision and logistical needs:

  • Location: Determine if the venue’s location suits your desired ambiance, whether it’s a beachfront, jungle, or island setting.
  • Capacity: Ensure the venue can accommodate your guest list comfortably without feeling overcrowded.
  • Amenities and Services: Check what amenities and services the venue offers, such as catering, accommodation, and wedding coordination.
  • Budget: Set a clear budget for the venue to align with your overall wedding expenses.
  • Accessibility: Consider the ease of access for you and your guests, including transportation options and proximity to local attractions.

By carefully considering these factors and exploring the diverse range of wedding venues Belize has to offer, you can find the perfect setting that brings your destination wedding vision to life.

Travel Tips for Your Belize Destination Wedding

Your dream destination wedding in Belize is within reach, but the journey there requires careful planning and consideration. I highly recommend getting a wedding coordinator for your Belize wedding. Here are essential travel tips to ensure your Belize wedding experience is seamless and unforgettable.

Planning Your Travel to Belize

Before embarking on your Belize destination wedding adventure, ensure you have all your travel documents in order. Check the visa requirements for Belize and make sure your passports are valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates. The most popular month to get married in the Caribbean is May because it’s at the end of peak tourist season and it’s right before hurricane season.

Best Airlines for Traveling to Belize

I highly recommend looking on Google Flights for looking for flights. Keep in mind most of the time, you should leave on Wednesdays, which are the cheapest days to fly for an international trip. When flying to Belize for your destination wedding, consider airlines like:

These airlines provide comfortable travel options to Belize City and reliable service for you and your wedding guests. I would recommend avoiding budget airlines like Spirit or Frontier simply because no one should suffer from numbness and back pain on their wedding day. I can confirm, the savings are not always worth it.

Essential Tips for a Smooth Destination Wedding Experience

To make the most of your Belize destination wedding:

  • Limit your guest list, fewer people means lower costs. ( & more private time)
  • Hire a wedding planner, it will save you so much stress.
  • Get Travel & Wedding Insurance
  • Include excursions that are just for you and your partner
  • Add a private session at sunrise or sunset with your photographer outside of your wedding day.

How to Bring Your Wedding Dress

Traveling with your wedding dress to Belize requires special care to ensure it arrives in pristine condition. Do not check the dress if possible, airlines do occasionally lose things. Carrying your dress in a garment bag as a carry-on item on the plane helps prevent damage or wrinkles. Upon arrival, reach out to your resort for steaming services to freshen up your gown before the big day.

Belize Destination Wedding Photographs

When it comes to your Belize destination wedding, capturing those precious moments through destination wedding photography is paramount. Having photographs to look back on allows you to relive the small moments as well as the big ones.

Choosing the Right Wedding Photographer for Your Destination Wedding in Belize

Wedding photography goes beyond just taking pictures – it is about capturing the emotions, laughter, and love shared on your wedding day. A skilled destination wedding photographer can frame each moment in a way that tells a story and evokes the feelings you experienced. More importantly, they can make you feel comfortable to just be yourself and reduce the stress of the day.

Selecting the right photographer for your Belize destination wedding is a crucial decision. Look for a photographer like myself, with years of experience in destination weddings, who focuses on your experience first, and will take the time to find out exactly what matters to you.

When choosing a photographer, their style, portfolio, and ability to capture candid moments is important. However it is not NEARLY as important as how comfortable you feel around them, they are there during the highs and possible lows of the day. The more comfortable you are, the more natural the photographs will feel.

In some cases, the included photographer at resorts doesn’t meet you beforehand and treats your day more as a shift then a one-time-only event. I highly recommend hand-picking your wedding photographer for this reason.

Unique locations in Belize

In Belize, tropical jungles, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and pristine white sandy beaches are everywhere. Whether you choose to tie the knot under swaying palm trees or overlooking the breathtaking Caribbean Sea, every moment is destined to be unforgettable.
