Non-traditional wedding ideas are changing the wedding industry, offering couples the freedom to ditch the rulebook and create unique celebrations. Gone are the days when every wedding followed the same cookie-cutter format – today’s couples are embracing their creativity and planning ceremonies that reflect their personalities and values. As a wedding photographer, I’ve seen firsthand how this trend has exploded in recent years, with more and more couples saying “I do” to unconventional weddings.
One bride I worked with summed it up perfectly: “We wanted our wedding to feel like us, not like everyone else’s idea of what a wedding should be.” If that’s something you agree with… You should fill out that contact form at the bottom!

Alternative Wedding Ideas
Destination Weddings
One of the most common non-traditional wedding ideas are destination weddings. Destination weddings offer couples the chance to get away from thier hometown and explore while combining their wedding and honeymoon into one unforgettable experience. From tropical beaches to historic castles, the possibilities are endless. You can actually go, whereever you want. If you’re planning a destination wedding, consider hiring a local wedding planner (one may be included with the venue) and visiting the location beforehand to iron out any potential issues.
Here’s a fun fact: You do not need to hire a local photographer. You can hire one you choose that you are comfortable with most which will help reduce a little of the stress.
My top 5 destination wedding recommendations:
- Ireland
- Rome
- Belize (at the temple ruins!)
- St Thomas in the Virgin islands
- Arizona
Themed Weddings
Themed weddings can range from elegant vintage affairs to out-of-this-world sci-fi extravaganzas. I’ve seen couples rock a 1920s theme, complete with flapper dresses and jazz bands, and others dive into a post-apocalyptic Fallout-inspired celebration with vault jumpsuits and Nuka-Cola cocktails. The key is to weave your theme into every aspect of the day, from invitations to decor, music, and even the menu.
One of my favorite weddings I’ve seen was a transportation-themed elopement where couples visited vintage ships, trains, cars, and ended the day with a private chef at really cool Airbnb.
Intimate Elopements
Elopements are gaining popularity as couples opt for intimate, stress-free ceremonies that focus on what really matters – being together doing what they love. These small-scale weddings offer the freedom to marry anywhere, from a mountaintop to a hidden beach, without the pressure of a large guest list or elaborate planning. Some creative elopement ideas could be a sunrise ceremony in Sedona ending with a private chef, Renting a private plane and stopping at different private airports, or touring Chicago and stopping at your favorite date night spots.
Fun fact: One of the most unique elopement locations ever recorded was in space! In 2003, a Russian cosmonaut married his bride while he was aboard the International Space Station and she was on Earth, with the ceremony conducted via satellite link.
5 Elopement Location Ideas:
Red Rock Sedona Elopement

- Location: Cathedral Rock Sedona, Arizona
Historic St. Augustine Elopement
- Idea: Tour the historic charm and architecture of St. Augustine. Say your vows in one of its beautiful historic locations, such as the Castillo de San Marcos or the St Augustine Lighthouse, followed by a romantic carriage ride through the cobblestone streets.
- Location:St. Augustine, Florida
- As the oldest city in the U.S., St. Augustine provides a rich historical setting with its Spanish colonial architecture and coastal charm.
Sunset Cliffs Elopement
- Idea: Elope with the dramatic scenery of Sunset Cliffs. Exchange vows with the sun setting over the Pacific Ocean, then enjoy a beachside picnic or a grab a milkshake at Hodads.
- Location:Sunset Cliffs, California
- The breathtaking cliffs and stunning ocean views make Sunset Cliffs a perfect location for a romantic coastal elopement.
Urban Rooftop Elopement in Chicago
- Idea: Choose a rooftop venue in Chicago with a skyline view. Say your vows with the city as your backdrop, followed by a romantic dinner at a top restaurant or a rooftop bar.
- Location: Chicago, Illinois
5. Lighthouse Elopement at Ponce Inlet
- Idea: Exchange vows at the historic Ponce Inlet Lighthouse, surrounded by the charm of a coastal setting. Enjoy a photo session around the lighthouse and beach, then celebrate with a picnic or a nearby waterfront restaurant.
- Location:Ponce Inlet Lighthouse, Florida
- The picturesque lighthouse and its coastal surroundings provide a serene and romantic setting for your elopement.
Alternative Bridal Parties
Nontraditional bridal parties are an alternative wedding idea all about celebrating the people who matter most to you. I’ve seen couples mix it up with “bridesmen” and “groomsmaids,” or ditch the concept altogether. Some couples even include their pets as part of the wedding party – nothing beats a ring-bearing pup in a tuxedo! One time, a couple even decided to include a Llama!
Pro tip: No matter how you structure your bridal party, make sure everyone feels valued. Consider giving each person a unique role or task that plays to their strengths, making them feel integral to your special day.
Or tell everyone about a secret job except one person, but don’t let the others tell that person what that job is. Only do that if you want to create chaos.
Get Ready Together
Getting ready together breaks tradition but offers couples a chance to share intimate moments before the ceremony. It can calm nerves, create beautiful unique photos, and allow you to savor every second of your wedding day together. I’ve seen couples turn this time into a mini-date, sharing a quiet breakfast or exchanging personal gifts. One pair even decided to write their vows together in the morning, which led to some incredibly emotional and genuine moments during the ceremony.
Fun fact: The tradition of not seeing each other before the wedding actually stems from the days of arranged marriages, when it was feared the groom might back out if he saw the bride beforehand. Today, more couples are choosing to ditch this outdated custom in favor of spending more time together on their big day.
Include a Tradition from Your Heritage
Incorporating cultural traditions into your wedding is a beautiful way to honor your heritage and create a ceremony that’s meaningful to you and your families. From the Jewish tradition of breaking the glass to the Chinese tea ceremony, there are countless ways to infuse your culture into your celebration.
Pro tip: If you’re blending traditions from different cultures, consider providing a brief explanation in your program or having the officiant explain the significance during the ceremony. This helps all guests appreciate and understand the beautiful customs you’re including.
3 Unique non-religous traditions
Tying the Knot (Celtic)
- Explanation: This ancient Celtic tradition involves literally “tying the knot” to symbolize the union of two people.
- How it’s done: During the ceremony, the couple’s hands are tied together with a cord or ribbon in a figure-eight shape, representing infinity and their eternal bond.
- Significance: It symbolizes the binding together of two lives and the couple’s commitment to each other.
La Marcha (Mexican)
- Explanation: In this Mexican wedding tradition, guests form a heart-shaped circle around the couple.
- How it’s done: The bride and groom walk around the circle, symbolizing their unity and the support of their loved ones.
- Significance: It represents the couple’s new life together surrounded by the love and support of their family and friends.
Polterabend (German)
- Explanation: This pre-wedding tradition involves breaking dishes to bring good luck.
- How it’s done: The night before the wedding, friends and family gather to break porcelain dishes. The couple then cleans up the shards together.
- Significance: It symbolizes the couple’s ability to work together to overcome any challenges they may face in their marriage.
Surprise Fireworks
Add an explosive finale to your wedding celebration, leaving guests in awe and creating unforgettable memories. To pull off this spectacular surprise, you’ll need to check local regulations, hire a professional pyrotechnic company (Absolutely DO NOT let your drunk uncle do it), and keep the plan under wraps.
Fun fact: One of the most famous weddings to feature fireworks was the nuptials of George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin in Venice. The couple treated their guests to a dazzling 7-minute fireworks display over the Grand Canal, lighting up the historic city in celebration of their wedding.
Backyard Weddings
Backyard weddings offer a personal, intimate setting with the comforts of home and create a new memory you’ll pass everyday. With some creativity, you can transform your outdoor space into a wedding venue, from hanging fairy lights in trees to setting up a cozy lounge area with vintage furniture. I once photographed a backyard wedding where the couple built a stunning floral arch using flowers from their own garden, creating a meaningful and beautiful backdrop for their vows.
Pro tip: When planning a backyard wedding, don’t forget the practical details. Renting restroom facilities is just common sense, check with your local authorities about noise ordinances, and have a solid rain plan.
Food Trucks
Stop with the prime rib. #2024
Food trucks bring a fun, casual vibe to weddings, offering a wide variety of food types for guests. You can mix and match trucks to cater to different tastes – think a taco truck paired with a gourmet ice cream truck for dessert.
Fun fact: According to recent wedding trends, the most popular food truck options at weddings are gourmet sliders, tacos, and wood-fired pizza.
Bridal Sessions
Taking bridal portraits before the wedding day allows for a relaxed, unhurried photo session without the time constraints of the big day. You can choose a location (your venue usually), have your hair and makeup trial on the same day, and get comfortable in front of the camera.
Pro tip: This may cost extra with your photographer, but reducing the amount of things happening in your wedding day may allow you to opt for less coverage of the day.
Handfasting
Handfasting is an ancient Celtic ritual that’s making a comeback in modern weddings. The ceremony involves binding the couple’s hands together with cords or ribbons, symbolizing their union and commitment. Today, couples are putting their own spin on this tradition, using everything from family heirlooms to custom-made ropes that reflect their personalities.
Pro tip: Choose cords or ribbons that have special meaning to you as a couple. You could use fabric from a loved one’s wedding dress, ribbons in colors that represent important aspects of your relationship, or cords made from materials that reflect your shared interests or heritage.
Pro tip #2: Do not use human hair – please.
Include Some Animals
Including animals in weddings has become a popular trend, adding a touch of awesome chaos to the wedding day. From horses to puppies, couples are finding creative ways to incorporate their pets or favorite animals. I once photographed a wedding where the couple included llamas dressed in a tuxedo & a headband.
Pro tip: When including animals in your wedding, prioritize their well-being and your guests’ comfort. Hire professional handlers, ensure the animals are comfortable in crowds, and have a designated quiet area for them to retreat to. Also, inform your guests in advance, especially if there are any allergy concerns.
Fun Fact: If you include a snake – you should not hire me.
Sparkler Exit Alternatives
Creative send-offs are popular nontraditional wedding ideas as couples look for different ways to end their wedding day. Instead of sparklers – which are sometimes not allowed and all the time a problem… Consider options like biodegradable confetti, bubbles, or even glow sticks for a nighttime exit. If you’d like to learn more, here’s an entire article about sparkler exit alternatives.
Pro tip: Whatever send-off you choose, make sure it’s safe and easy for guests to participate in. Provide clear instructions, have someone coordinate the timing, and consider any potential cleanup needed. For nighttime exits, ensure the area is well-lit to avoid any mishaps and to capture great photos.
Alternative Wedding Ideas FAQ
What is an unconventional wedding?
An unconventional wedding breaks free from traditional wedding norms, allowing couples to celebrate in a way that reflects their personalities and values. It could mean anything from a themed costume party to an intimate ceremony in a meaningful location – the key is to ditch the rulebook and create a day that feels authentically you.
How to have a wedding that is not a wedding?
To have a wedding that doesn’t feel like a typical wedding, focus on the elements that matter most to you and your partner, rather than what’s expected. This could mean swapping a formal reception for a food truck festival, exchanging vows while getting ready, or hosting a weekend-long adventure for your closest friends and family.
What is the cheapest option for a wedding?
The cheapest option for a wedding is usually an intimate elopement or a simple ceremony at city hall followed by a small celebration. However, with some creativity and DIY spirit, even larger gatherings can be budget-friendly – think backyard barbecues, potluck wedding receptions, or off-season venue rentals.
