If you’re thinking about doing your engagement photos at the Old Michigan City Lighthouse or Washington Park Beach, you’re in the right spot. I’m a wedding photographer originally from Valparaiso, and I’ve photographed here a few times now. This area has a peaceful vibe early in the day and gets pretty active around sunset—especially on hot summer evenings when the pier fills up fast. This post breaks down exactly how to make the most of this location, what nearby spots are worth adding, and what times work best for clean, cinematic shots.

Why The Michigan City Lighthouse & Washington Park Beach Works for Engagement Photos

Washington Park Beach and the Old Michigan City Lighthouse are two of the best places in Indiana for engagement photos—especially around golden hour. Sunset here can be incredible: soft reflections off the water, glowing tones on the lighthouse, and waves that sometimes crash dramatically against the pier when the lake’s a little rough. It can get busy (even in the off-season), but if you time it right, it’s totally worth it.

The pier is free to access and easy to shoot on—just note that the catwalk above isn’t open to the public. Along the beach, you’ll find dunes, rocks, and even a few hills near the zoo that help break up the background and give you more variety in your photos. There’s paid parking right near the beach, and a restaurant steps away if you want to turn your session into a full evening out.

Best Photo Spots at This Location

I usually like to start sessions up in the dunes and work my way toward the Old Michigan City Lighthouse pier. That way, by the time the sun is dropping over the lake, we’re down by the lighthouse with that golden glow hitting the water. The pier itself is a solid spot—especially if you shoot with the lighthouse in the background or catch the light reflecting off the lake. Just a heads-up: the rocks on the right side of the pier (if you’re facing the lighthouse) can be slick, and it’s often a hangout for local fishermen, which can limit angles.

Outside the main beach, there’s a canal nearby with boat docks, a small fountain, and a row of newer condos that make for a clean modern contrast to the beach vibes. If you’re willing to walk a bit, the area around the Michigan City Zoo is worth it too. The dunes are great for clean framing, and there’s a hill in the back of the zoo that gives you a full view of the shoreline and the city—an underrated spot if you’re trying to mix in some variety.

Nearby Spots to Pair With

If you’ve got time to explore beyond the beach and pier, there are a few spots nearby that can give your session a whole new feel. The Washington Park Zoo is one of the most photogenic places in the area—even if you’re just using the paths, dunes, or the hill in the back that overlooks the shoreline and downtown Michigan City. If you’re shooting later in the day and want something quieter, the canal near the Old Lighthouse Museum is another great option. It has a clean, modern look with boat docks, a fountain, and a row of new condos lining the water—solid for evening light or even night shots if you’re going for something different.

If you want to keep it indoors or add a little architectural contrast, the Michigan City Public Library is about five minutes away and has some interesting lines and textures if it’s open. You could also head a little further out to Friendship Botanic Gardens for a nature-heavy session that feels completely different from the beach. All of these are within a 10-minute drive and can add a ton of variety without killing the momentum of the session

Michigan City Lighthouse Engagement or Couples Photo Session FAQ

When’s the best time to start a session here?
I usually start about 60 to 90 minutes before sunset. That gives us time to move through the dunes, pier, and lighthouse as the light softens. If you want the full experience and the most variety, I recommend a 3-hour creative session—this location deserves it.

Is it ever too crowded to shoot?
It can be, especially during warm evenings and weekends. The pier and beach stay busy, even in winter. The canal nearby is a great backup if the main spots are slammed.

Do you use flash or special gear here?
Yep—when the sun’s high or we want to get creative with light near the lighthouse, I bring flash. I also shoot low a lot in the dunes for clean sky backgrounds or dramatic silhouettes.

What should couples wear for a beach shoot like this?
Avoid tight clothes, bold prints, or anything uncomfortable to move in. Flowy, breathable fabrics work best. I’m all about simple combos like black tees and khakis for guys, or a long skirt and fitted top for women—something that won’t fight with wind or sand.

Any sketchy stuff to be aware of?
Sometimes the parking lot gets rowdy. I’ve seen cops called a few times, but it’s never been an issue during a session. Just be aware and park away from other people if possible.

What’s a unique photo idea most people miss?
The hill behind the zoo has an epic view of the shoreline and city—great for a wide shot at the end of a session. If you’re shooting in the zoo, see if you can frame one of the bigger animals in the background. It’s rare, but it’s a cool bonus when it works.
