By changing my physical perspective and utilizing creative compression, we turned ordinary downtown fixtures into high-design framing elements. In one sequence, shooting straight through the circular rings of a roadside bike parking rack built a distinct, graphic telescope effect that completely locked the focus onto Colleen and Lucas. It strips away the visual clutter of the background city streets and forces the viewer’s eye onto the quiet, candid interaction between the two of them.

Outside the historic Orpheum Theatre, we used the polished, dark glass of a neighboring storefront window to build a clean mirror reflection. The composition splits the frame perfectly in half: the real, crisp architectural details of the historic marquee on the left, and a soft, painterly reflection of the couple embracing on the right. It captures the grandeur of the historic downtown theater district while adding a highly sophisticated, abstract edge to the gallery.
Tracking High-Contrast Light and Shadow
As the sun begins to dip below the city skyscrapers, the lighting completely shifts. Instead of the open, washed-out light found in nature, the city grid creates intense, high-contrast spotlight corridors.
We used the entrance of a concrete parking garage to play with these directional beams. By positioning Colleen and Lucas right on the edge of a sharp diagonal shadow line, the ambient sunlight illuminated them while casting their elongated silhouettes deep into the dark background of the concrete structure. It is a technique that embraces the moody, high-contrast reality of the city, trading a soft pastel aesthetic for pure cinematic drama.
